The City of Burlington has issued skating tips for residents to keep the community safe on the ice this winter.

Burlington Recreation, Community and Culture’s Twitter page is reminding the community to ensure their skates are serviced regularly as unsharpened skates can pose risks when cutting through ice.

“Just like it’s dangerous to use a dull knife in the kitchen, it’s not a good idea to cut through ice on unsharpened skates,” reads a tweet on the page for the City’s recreation department.

“So if you bring your skates to a rink or arena, ensure they’re serviced regularly.”

The community is also reminded to keep the following rules in mind to keep rinks safe for everyone this season.

Helmets are recommended and required for children six years old and under in arenas and on artificial outdoor skating surfaces.

Hockey nets, sticks, pucks and balls are not permitted on outdoor ice or artificial surfaces.

While skate aids are permitted for those who are new to skating, pets, food and drinks must be kept off the rinks.

Skates must be worn at all times on skating surfaces.
