The City of Brampton is bringing back its backyard ice rink contest.

Brampton residents who are planning to build a backyard or community ice rink this season are encouraged to enter the city’s contest for a chance to win prizes including a one-hour skate with an NHL Alumni on the winning rinks.

The contest works by having residents show the city a photo of their rinks once it has been set up.

An evaluation will be conducted based on durability, creativity and safety.

“Setting up a backyard rink is easier than you think! All you need is space, patience, frosty temperatures. Remember to keep safety top of mind,” reads the City’s website.

The City recommends mapping out the space in the backyard and ensuring the rink isn’t located in an area that slopes towards the home, or is too close to the home.

Additionally, the City recommends that residents flood as often as necessary in order to maintain a smooth, safe ice surface. The ideal temperature for freezing the ice is -15C.

Those with a wet or leaky basement should refrain from installing a backyard rink.

A gold, silver and bronze winner will be announced on the City’s social media channels on Feb. 3, 2023.

Additional details on prizes and who the NHL Alumni is will be announced soon.

Residents must complete the submission form by Jan. 31, 2023.
