City looking for ‘garbage’ art proposals in Mississauga

A public art competition in Mississauga is looking for artists who aren’t afraid of dumpster diving.
The City of Mississauga has put out a call for artists’ proposals for a temporary public art project that explores people’s relationship with garbage.
The public competition is open to all professional artists living in Canada.
The artist proposal must include “locally collected trash as a major part of its creation and explores the connection among the environment, waste reduction, and the circular economy,” the project description reads.
The goal is to combine artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation with environmental conservation.
“The project aims to challenge the perception of waste culture by providing a unique platform for community members and visitors to learn more about the circular economy and eliminate waste by reducing, reusing, and recycling,” the description continues.

The artwork will be on display in J.C. Saddington Park, 53 Lake Street for at least one year starting in September 2023.
The City of Mississauga Public Art Program has partnered with the Parks, Forestry, and Environment section for the project.
The total budget for the project is $15,000 plus HST.
