This week several products are being pulled from the marketplace including two different brands of children’s cribs, a steam iron and a safety device used to help locate individuals lost during an avalanche.

Residents in Mississauga and Brampton are urged to check their homes for the following products. Consumers are asked to discontinue using the item and safely dispose of it. If possible they are encouraged to try and contact the retailer for a refund.

Black Diamond Equipment Recon LT Avalanche Transceiver

Alpine Avy Safety Set

The recall involves the Recon LT Avalanche Transceiver which was manufactured between May 2021 and March 2023.

The serial numbers with the first four digits between the range of 2119-2239 are the models that are affected. The serial number can be identified by connecting the beacon to the PIEPS app using Bluetooth.

The transceiver is made of plastic and measures 11 cm tall by 7 cm wide. The exterior is grey exterior, with a blue top, and an LCD screen on the front.

The devices are worn by skiers/snowboarders/snowmobilers to aid search and rescue should they or their partners become buried in an avalanche. The transceiver was sold as a standalone unit and as part of two avalanche safety sets.

The transceivers can unexpectedly enter ‘search’ mode despite the rotary switch being in its ‘send’ position. As a result the device can fail to transmit a signal.

Risk: May pose delayed search and rescue operations in the case of an avalanche.

What you should do: It is advised to immediately stop using the product and follow the instructions on the Black Diamond website to update the firmware or request to receive a full refund.
