The OMAs – formerly known as the Oshawa Music Awards – will formally honour the 2021 Music Industry Leader recipient and three Lifetime Achievement winners tonight at the Biltmore Theatre in downtown Oshawa.

Artemis Chartier, a songwriter, flute player, session musician, teacher and co-founder of the SASS song writing group for children is this year’s Music Industry Leader of the Year.

Ivan Berry, the founder of the Beat Factory record label and one of the biggest names in urban music in Canada, was one of three Lifetime Achievement Award winners at this year’s OMAs.

Berry will be joined by Andy Gondek, a passionate musician and prolific songwriter who played on dozens of local bands in the Oshawa area in the 1960s and 1970s; and Al Cole, the founder of Cole Train Music and noted music historian and poster artist.

Gondek and Cole, who both died last year, will be honoured posthumously.

The biggest prizes, that of Artist or Band of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Emerging Artist – as well as Teacher of the Year – will be announced next week.

Juno-winning prog-rockers Crown Lands and post-hardcore bangers Judgement lead the way with three nominations each.
