One man has now been charged after a fight involving a large group of people near Memorial Park in downtown Oshawa last month sent a victim to hospital with multiple stab wounds.
Durham Regional Police responded to Simcoe Street and John Street at 10:30 p.m. on June 14 after receiving reports that a “large amount of individuals” were fighting. Officers arrived on scene and discovered a man suffering from as many as a dozen stab wounds and another man with minor injuries.
The stabbing victim was transported to a Toronto trauma centre in serious but non-life-threatening condition, where he has since been upgraded to stable condition.
On Canada Day officers located the suspect in Oshawa and taken into custody.
Steven Edward McCarthy, 30, of no fixed address, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, two counts of administering a noxious substance, schedule 1 drug trafficking and two probation breaches.
He was held for a bail hearing. At the time of the incident McCarthy was on weapons prohibition conditions.
