Winter is coming and with it are changes to Hamilton’s curbside leaf and yard waste collection.

Starting Dec. 6, the City of Hamilton will not be collecting yard waste bags from residents’ curbs on garbage day for the months of December, January and February.

“Residential yard waste can still be taken to a Community Recycling Centre for free all year round,” said a City of Hamilton press release.

The weekly curbside collection of the yard waste will resume again on February 28.

Christmas tree collection is not impacted by the change and will still be collected during the first and second weeks of January.

Compost Giveaway

In the meantime, the City is hosting its annual Compost Giveaway at Turner Park, 344 Rymal Rd E, between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 9).

The compost is made up of the very same yard waste Hamiltonians lug out to their curbs every week.

“As a thank you for participating in the yard waste program, the City gives some of the compost back to residents to use on vegetable gardens, flower beds and lawns,” the release said.

Residents looking to take advantage of the giveaway should bring their own containers to collect the compost.

More information about the giveaway and the City’s waste collection services can be found on its website.
