A tribute to the life and career of former Brampton Mayor Peter Robertson will be held this Friday, June 13.
Robertson, who died May 15 at the age of 86, served as mayor from 1991 to 2000.
The celebration of life ceremony will take place at St. Paul’s United Church (30 Main Street South). at 3 p.m. with a reception at City Hall to follow.
Robertson was first elected as a city councillor in 1979 and had served on several local committees over the years.
In 1990, following the drowning death of Mayor Ken Whillans, Robertson ran for the city’s highest position and defeated three other challengers for the job.
After successfully running for re-election three times, Robertson was defeated in the mayor’s race by Susan Fennell in 2000.
Beyond his political achievements, Robertson was a professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Education. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he worked to promote the value of learning and civic responsibility in every facet of public life.
For his many years of community service, Peter Robertson Boulevard was named after him.
“Peter was a dedicated public servant who spent decades working to make Brampton stronger and more inclusive,” said current Mayor Patrick Brown. “His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched – as mayor, educator and community leader.”
