The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the entity that oversees Ontario’s police departments, is still investigating the death of a 19-year-old Brampton resident.

On Thursday (October 7), Kristy Denette, communications coordinator for the SIU, confirmed with inBrampton.com that the Brampton teen’s cause of death has been determined.

However, due to the fact the investigation is still ongoing, it is not being released at this time. Additionally, while the cause of death has been determined the manner of his death has not.

According to the SIU, on April 26, the teen met with two off-duty police officers with the Toronto Police Service for a private sale in the area of Bellchase Trail and Highway 50.

After the transaction, the officers realized the item they just bought was counterfeit, and they chased and confronted the seller.

Shortly after the altercation, the man’s friends picked him up and saw that he might need medical attention. They took him to a nearby hospital, and he died shortly thereafter.

While the details regarding the interaction are unknown, the SIU believes there may be a witness who was driving a light-coloured SUV in the area at the time of the incident.

The SIU is urging the driver to contact them if they did witness the altercation by calling 416-622-2342.
