Carney, Ford both assured car manufacturer Stellantis has plans for Brampton

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford both say they have been assured that Stellantis hasn’t given up on Brampton.

This follows the news that the American car manufacturer has cancelled plans to produce the Jeep Compass at the Brampton Assembly Plant and instead will have the car built at a facility in Illinois.

According to The Canadian Press, Carney said he spoke with the global head of Stellantis on Tuesday and received assurances that there are options for the Brampton plant and support would be provided to local workers.

Meanwhile, Ford said he, too, has been told by the car manufacturer that there are plans for Brampton.

Answering questions from the media at an unrelated news conference yesterday, Ford said he had a conversation with the president of Stellantis and was told the company is looking at Brampton as the location for producing another vehicle.

Ford also said that Stellantis will offer jobs at their Windsor Assembly Plant to some of the laid-off Brampton workers.

Both Carney and Ford said they were disappointed with the news about Brampton and are demanding that Stellantis fulfill obligations to build vehicles north of the border.

On Tuesday, Stellantis announced it is shifting its planned Jeep Compass production to the U.S., affecting 3,000 Brampton workers who had been waiting for the retooling of the Williams Parkway plant to produce the Jeep.

Stellantis has also said it has plans for Brampton that will be revealed following negotiations with the Canadian federal government.
