Police are asking residents in Brampton and Mississauga to be vigilant due to increased vehicle thefts.

In a news release, Peel police said there’s been an increase in vehicles being stolen from residents’ driveways overnight, with thieves targeting Range Rovers in particular.

Police are advising residents to reduce their risk of being targeted by following a number of tips, including parking in a locked garage; using a steering wheel lock, automatic engine shut-off and tracking device; covering or blocking your vehicle identification number when parked; storing keys and fobs away from windows and doors; installing security cameras, ensuring the doors are locked and windows rolled up when a vehicle is not in use and installing good lighting.

Police are also advising residents to block in a vehicle more likely to be targeted for theft with a different vehicle (if the household has more than one car) and install aftermarket products such as GPS trackers, remote vehicle shut-off devices, and on-board data port locks to prevent key cloning.

“Homeowners are encouraged to become familiar with their neighbours, be mindful of suspicious activity, and report that to the police,” police said in a news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators in the 11 Division Auto Theft Unit by calling 905-453-2121, ext. 1152.
