Peel car theft Mississauga and Brampton

Auto thefts in Mississauga and Brampton have skyrocketed this year with the number of stolen vehicles up nearly 30 per cent with still more than six weeks to go in the year, according to data supplied by Peel Regional Police.

The biggest hotspot is Malton – a logical place for thieves with so many cars unattended near the airport while the owners are on vacation – but several other pockets of central Brampton and Mississauga were also favoured target areas.

Less than four per cent of the crimes – which are mostly committed by professionals – have been solved. Slightly over half are considered ‘ongoing’ cases while 41.75 per cent have been deemed unsolved by Peel Regional Police.

So far in 2022, 4,788 vehicles have been stolen in Mississauga and Brampton, a rate that will likely crest 5,000 before the month is out.

Last year there were 3,751 vehicles stolen in the region in 2021 but with a year to solve the cases the numbers still aren’t pretty: Just 4.1 per cent of the cases are considered solved and more 61 per cent are ‘unsolved.’

Year-to-year the numbers are also stark, with 5,518 vehicles stolen from November 2021 to today.

Numbers from last month (September 22-October 22) show 450 vehicles were stolen in Peel Region, a number considered ‘alarming’ but about average for 2022.

Mississauga reported 266 stolen vehicles last month with 184 cars and trucks stolen in Brampton.
