After months of operating over capacity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the capacity at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) in Burlington is finally on the decline.

In a statement released on May 13, Eric Vandewall, President and CEO of Joseph Brant Hospital confirmed that the hospital’s capacity has reached 83 per cent.

“I continue to have cautious optimism about the current COVID-19 situation, as we witness decreasing regional infection rates and an increase in COVID-19 vaccinations,” said Vandewall in the statement.

“In terms of our hospital’s capacity, today JBH is at 83 per cent capacity. We are currently caring for 10 patients with confirmed COVID-19 as well as 20 under investigation and 14 resolved cases – 7 of our confirmed COVID-19 patients are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).”

According to Vandewall, the Halton Region COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic at Joseph Brant Hospital has administered more than 20,000 vaccine doses to the community since March 12.

In an interview with inhalton.com‘s Khaled Iwamura, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward also confirmed that hospital capacity is moving in “the right direction.”

For the past four days, daily COVID-19 case numbers in Halton have fallen below 100.

“Protecting the public while continuing to practice safe physical distancing, lockdown, and public health measures is what will push us through to the other side of this pandemic,” concluded Vandewall in the statement.

“Please continue to look after each other. We will get through this third wave together.”
