Canadian travellers to the U.S. will be able to stay for longer visits if a new bill becomes law.

If approved, the Canadian Snowbird Visa Act will extend visits for those who own or lease a residence to 24o days each year, two months longer than what current regulations allow.

The move comes as tensions between the two countries remain high over President Donald Trump’s sanctions against the importation of Canadian goods into the U.S.

Because of Trump’s new tariff rules, Canadians have been retaliating by reducing visits south of the border, and the appeal to the snowbirds is seen by some as an attempt to win back the tourists.

The Canadian Snowbird Association said it has been lobbying U.S. Congress to get the act approved.

Representatives from both California and Florida — two states that have been affected by the decline of Canadian travel — have sponsored the act, which was introduced late last month.
