Hamilton on Canada Day: What’s open and closed

This year, Canada Day falls on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

Because Canada Day falls on a Saturday, some businesses and services will be closed to observe the holiday on Monday, July 3.

Hamilton is getting ready to party for Canada Day at Bayfront Park (200 Harbourfront Drive), with celebrations that include custom fireworks at 10 p.m.

For those looking to celebrate with a bang, the Hamilton Fire Department recently reminded residents that fireworks are ONLY permitted on Victoria Day and Canada Day, between dusk and 11 p.m. If inclement weather on those days prevents fireworks, they can be used the day following the holiday between dusk and 11 p.m.

Here are places and services in Hamilton that will be open and closed for the Canada Day weekend:

  • Beaches
  • Outdoor pools
  • Hamilton Conservation Authority areas and trails
  • Some grocery stores and pharmacies
  • Wild Waterworks
  • Battlefield House Museum and Park national historic site
  • Some restaurant patios
  • Municipal golf courses
  • Dundurn Castle national historic site is presenting the Canada Day Military Tattoo from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Six of the 11 Hamilton Beer Store locations will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Home delivery won’t be available.) The following stores are open:

    150 Barton St. E.

    282 Parkdale Ave. N.

    75 Centennial Pkwy.

    959 Fennell Ave. E.

Closed:

  • CF Lime Ridge
  • Eastgate Square
  • All Hamilton Public Library branches are closed Saturday and Sunday (the virtual branch is always open at hpl.ca)
  • Community Recycling Centres
  • All City of Hamilton Recreation Centres and Arenas (reopen for regular hours on July 3)
  • Major bank branches will be closed from Saturday, July 1 to Monday July 3
  • LCBO (where permitted by local municipalities, some LCBO Convenience Outlets may observe their regular hours of business on Canada Day)
  • Government offices
  • Hamilton Farmers’ Market is closed from Saturday to Monday
  • Dundurn Castle national historic site
  • Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology
  • Whitehern Historic House and Garden national historic site
  • Hamilton Children’s Museum (temporarily closed due to an expansion project)
  • Hamilton Military Museum
  • Fieldcote Memorial Park and Museum
  • Griffin House national historic site (closed due to capital project work)
  • City of Hamilton Animal Services office counter and shelter closed Saturday (but open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 2); for animal-related emergencies, call 905-574-3433

  • The Public Health Services COVID-19 Vaccine Booking Line (closed all long weekend)

Waste collection:

  • No change to green bin, recycling, yard waste and garbage collection. Waste will be picked up on regular collection day and must be at the curb by 7 a.m.

Transit:

  • HSR will operate on a Sunday schedule, with no service in Waterdown. Routes that do not operate on Sundays will not operate on Canada Day. For updates on HSR scheduling and service, check the City’s website.
  • Trans-Cab service will align with HSR Sunday schedules. Service between Countrywide Recycling and the Twenty at Nebo transfer point will not be running.
  • GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule

Closed on Monday, July 3:

  • Banks
  • City of Hamilton administrative offices
  • All Hamilton civic museums
  • Canada Post (no mail pickup or delivery)
  • DARTS wheelchair accessible transportation will be operating on holiday service hours (subscription trips on DARTS, except dialysis trips, are cancelled; passengers must make a reservation in advance to travel)
  • Accessible Transportation Services customer service office will be closed
  • City of Hamilton Animal Services office counter and shelter (for animal-related emergencies, call 905-574-3433)
  • Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse
  • Hamilton Farmers’ Market
  • Housing Services office at 350 King Street East
  • Licensing and By-Law Phone Queue Line 905-546-2782 (for emergencies, call 905-546-2489)
