For those who can stand the heat, Canada Day celebrations are planned in Toronto, with some opportunities to stay cool.
Much of southern Ontario is under an intense and prolonged heat wave this week, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. As of Tuesday, the Greater Toronto Area is under a heat warning.
On Canada Day, temperatures are expected to hit a high of 34 C, with the humidex, it could feel like 44 C.
The City of Toronto has several Canada Day events planned, including live music, dance performances, a citizenship ceremony, kids’ activities and fun soccer in Nathan Phillips Square from noon to 6 p.m.
The city’s flagship fireworks display will be at Ashbridges Bay Park, 1561 Lake Shore Blvd. E., starting at 10 p.m. on July 1. There are more events scheduled across the city.
“We’re excited to welcome residents and visitors to celebrate Canada Day across Toronto with free, family-friendly activities,” Kayla Lewis, media relations manager, City of Toronto, told INsauga.com in an email.
But with the heat wave, the city is offering opportunities for people to cool off.
Starting on June 26, all city-owned outdoor and wading pools opened on a full-time summer schedule, open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., including Wednesday, July 1. Splash pads are open and operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Check location schedules online before visiting.
“City of Toronto pools, wading pools and splash pads will be open, and more than 500 Cool Spaces are available across the city to help people stay safe and comfortable,” Lewis said.
The Heat Relief Network is a city‑wide network of more than 500 cool spaces available throughout the summer, not just during heat warnings. People can access libraries, community centres, civic buildings, pools, splash pads, select malls and partner facilities.
The city is also offering free sunscreen at waterfront parks, High Park and municipal golf courses this year.
