A local aficionado of antique jewelry, and more specifically cameos, will be the guest at the next Oakville Historical Society’s Speaker Night.
Marie Descent, a pharmacist by profession, has always been interested in gemstones. After taking several gemology courses, she developed a deep appreciation for antique jewellery, fell into its rabbit hole, and ultimately, discovered the side tunnel of cameos.
Cameos have been around for thousands of years and there is a lot more than meets the eye when looking at them. Details include the different materials from which they are crafted, their uses, diverse subject matter, and how styles have evolved over the years.
In short, they are more than grandma’s old brooch.
While reading and studying everything that she could about these miniature works of art, Descent has become a passionate cameo enthusiast and collector.
While she doesn’t call herself an expert, Descent has acquired much knowledge on cameos and will be sharing her knowledge at the meeting on Monday, May 27, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Oakville Historical Society Speakers’ Nights are open to the general public as well as members.
The in-person events take place at the Coach House, 8 Navy Street.
Parking is available at the museum as well as on nearby streets.
