Dozens of unbuckled drivers were slapped with almost 200 tickets by cops in Caledon over the Easter weekend.

The Caledon OPP say some 187 seatbelt tickets were issued by officers over the long weekend.

A properly worn seat belt greatly increases the chance of surviving a motor vehicle collision, and there have been approximately 500 motor vehicle collision fatalities or life-altering injuries in Peel Region over the last five years.

“As a driver or passenger, it is important to respect the life-saving value of a seat belt and the proven fact that the best position to be in during a crash is securely fastened in your seat,” police said in a statement.

The charges can come with fines up to $240 and two demerit points for seat belt infractions.

The Region of Peel has a “Vision Zero” strategy aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries.
