Busy Mississauga street slated for major overhaul

A major Mississauga street is getting an overhaul that could see some car lanes removed and bike lanes added.

The Glen Erin Dr. project will stretch 3.1 km between Britannia Rd. W and Derry Rd. W. and ultimately aims to make the street safer and accessible for all vehicles and more pedestrian friendly.

Other options under consideration include more on-street parking, additional areas for pedestrians to cross, noise barriers and reducing the speed limit.

Currently there are four lanes on the north-south street (two in each direction) and preliminary reports indicate the reduction of lanes will not have a major impact on car traffic.

The City of Mississauga says the project is part of the Vision Zero plan that prioritizes safety and looks to eliminate loss of life or injuries caused by traffic through. This is done through a redesign of the road system that takes steps such as separating vehicle traffic from bike lanes and pedestrians, among other measures.

There is no timeframe for when the work is carried out if the plan is approved.

The third public meeting on the proposed changes for Glen Erin Dr. takes place May 12. This virtual event can be accessed through this channel.
