Burlington will have one fewer taxi company by the end of this week.

After 53 years, Burlington Taxi will be closing up shop on Friday (Nov. 26). The company made the announcement in a tweet on Tuesday.

“While we are sorry to say goodbye, we are fortunate for the lifetime of friendships made with our drivers, staff and the incredible customers that made Burlington Taxi what it was,” it read.

The taxi company had made an effort to adjust to competition from ride-sharing apps, introducing its own in 2013. It was also a fixture in Burlington’s annual Santa Claus parade.

The closure may raise questions about travellers and area residents who do not or prefer not to drive a car being undeserved. The Halton Community Services Directory lists only one other taxi company in the city, Deluxe Taxi. Another that is operating in the city is Gem Taxi, and there are several companies which sell airport transportation.
