Burlington residents warned to stay off thin ice surface

Stay off the ice!

That simple warning can save your life as Burlington officials say that even though there is a layer of ice on top of the water surface at LaSalle Marina, it is not safe to traverse.

The thin layer of ice is due to the underwater bubblers that are used to aerate and circulate the water and to prevent thicker layers of ice from forming. Still, ice can appear which may give the impression that it is safe to walk or even skate on. It isn’t.

“People should just stay off the ice surface near the marina,” said a City spokesperson. “The bubblers make it so only a thin layer of ice forms and people can be fooled into thinking it is a lot thicker than it is. It’s not worth taking a chance.”

They went on to say that not only is the surface unsafe for humans, but the thin layer will also not support pets on any other type of animal.

“Play it safe and just stay away,” the spokesperson said.
