Burlington’s EmpowerPharm is Canada’s first ever pharmaceutical facility certified to manufacture products containing marijuana.

Health Canada granted the local company a Drug Establishment Licence (DEL) on Monday, the first in more than four decades for a new Canadian-owned company that has built a facility for prescription drugs.

Having previously received a Cannabis Drug Licence, a Standard Processing Licence and a Cannabis Research Licence, EmpowerPharm now finds itself compliant with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

Clinical trials are currently underway to advance Empower CBD™, a new cannabidiol-based prescription medicine indicated for anxiety that would be prescribed under the direction of a qualified physician.

Cannabidiol is a chemical in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as marijuana or hemp.

Currently none of the cannabis products on the market used for anxiety are approved as prescription medicines by Health Canada.

Canadians are facing a spike in anxiety due to COVID-19 with the effects expected to be felt for years, according to the Canadian Mental Health Commission.

EmpowerPharm, which includes a state-of-the-art $30 million manufacturing facility, was established in 2018 by Aubrey Dan and Peter Billiaert.

Together Dan and Billiaert have over 55 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
