Mariam Manaa, a 26-year-old whose family immigrated to Canada when she was young, wants to bring her voice to provincial politics.

Manaa is the Liberal candidate in Burlington. The riding will not have an incumbent running after Conservative Jane McKenna announced she’s stepping down to make a run at the Halton Regional Chair position.

Manaa has spent the last four years working for Burlington’s Liberal MP Karina Gould.

“I spent most of my time working in the constituency office in Burlington,” said Manaa.

“I saw, first-hand every day, the troubles and issues people in Burlington are facing.”

Among the main topics Manaa said she hopes to focus on if elected is housing.

“I’m literally facing it myself. Rent is expensive. I don’t know if or when I’ll be able to purchase a home. I think we need to bring this experience to the legislature.”

Other priorities for Manaa include education, health care, long-term care, and climate change.

“My door will always be open to my constituents. I’ve seen, first-hand, that we need to listen to everyone and serve them properly.”

The provincial election is Thursday, June 2.
