Burlington Hydro warns customers of new telephone scam

Burlington Hydro is warning customers of a new telephone scam.

According to Burlington Hydro, they have been receiving numerous calls from concerned customers who have been targeted in a hydro cut-off scam.

The scam involves people asking for immediate payments over the phone and threatening to disconnect power immediately.

Fraud alert! Our customers are being targeted in a telephone scam,” wrote Burlington Hydro on Twitter.

“We NEVER ask for immediate payment over the phone or threaten to disconnect power immediately.”

Burlington Hydro is advising residents that if they see 1-866-932-6616 on their call display, it is a legitimate number.

Additionally, they are reminding customers to remain vigilant should they receive a suspicious call from anyone claiming to be from Burlington Hydro and asking for personal information.

“Simply hang up,” warns Burlington Hydro.

Customers who have received these calls are advised to call Burlington Hydro Customer Service at (905) 332-1851 to report the incident.

They should also report the incident immediately to the OPP’s Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
