With one given the go ahead and two more in the works, there will soon be plenty of places in Burlington to give your dog a leash-free experience.

The construction contract is about to be awarded for the first of the facilities, located in Central Park, at New St. and Drury Lane in downtown Burlington.

The park is going to cost a little more than expected, exceeding the budgeted amount of $120,000 by about $35,000. City staff blame the increase on the rising price of steel and oil.

In addition, both Wards 1 and 5 are in the process of having suitable sites found for leash-free parks.

There are four locations currently under consideration, but each has its own benefits and challenges.

Hidden Valley Park has access to parking and water and a good location in Aldershot, but would necessitate the removal of a pair of picnic areas.

Orchard Community Park has two possible locations and both are walkable by many in the local neighbourhood, with access to parking and water. However, they’re in a busy complex and the elementary school would lose greenspace it uses for recess and gym classes.

Pathfinder Park is walkable and has access to parking, but would necessitate the removal of open greenspace.

The director of Recreation, Community and Culture has been asked to complete public engagement to determine preferred locations.
