The Burlington fire department has issued a safety reminder to residents about the importance of having a working smoke alarm.

Residents are reminded that every home must have working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas. Depending on the age of the home, smoke alarms may also be located inside each bedroom.

It’s important to remember that smoke alarms expire after 10 years and some, even sooner. As a result, no matter the power source, alarms more than 10 years old must be replaced by law.

Residents are reminded to test smoke alarms on a monthly basis and replace batteries at least once per year.

“Protect yourself, your loved ones and your pets,” said the Burlington fire department on Twitter.
