If you plan on using the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge to commute through Burlington and Hamilton this weekend or in the not-too-distant future, you’ll need to plan an alternative route.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) recently announced that the bridge will be fully closed for construction work from Friday, Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. until Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 8 a.m.

After that, the bridge will be closed from Jan. 2 at 12 a.m. until March 20 at 12 a.m.

The closure will impact drivers, cyclists and pedestrians travelling in both directions.

During these periods, signage will be in place to direct traffic to alternative routes, the PSPC said on its website.

The bridge, which has been undergoing extensive repairs, carries Eastport Drive traffic across Hamilton Harbour.

Constructed in 1961, the 381-ft bridge is the sixth bridge to span the canal since 1830. The lift allows vessels to enter and exit Hamilton Harbour into Lake Ontario.
