Buffalo N.Y. earthquake felt in Mississauga, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines

A rare earthquake that shook residents in Buffalo, New York was also felt in Southern Ontario including Mississauga, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded at 6:15 a.m. in Buffalo this morning (Feb. 6), according to Earthquakes Canada.

“Lightly felt in southern Ontario. There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected,” Earthquakes Canada reports.

U.S. media is reporting it was 3.8 magnitude quake.

It was relatively minor compared to the deadly quake in Turkey and Syria that hit early Monday morning. The magnitude 7.8 quake has killed more than 1,300 people.

But the shaking startled residents not used to earthquakes in New York state.

“A Rare magnitude 3.8 earthquake has just been felt in Upstate NY Across Buffalo with multiple people reporting light to moderate shaking as the earthquake hit around 6:15 AM EST time,” one person wrote on Twitter.

A video shows a home shaking.

Residents in Southern Ontario are reporting they also felt the earthquake.

“House was shaking as if a train was nearby,” one Mississauga resident wrote.

“Earthquake or earth shaking felt for about 5seconds in Mississauga this morning at 615am. Sounded like a nearby Jack hammer shaking the house,” another person wrote.

Residents in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls also felt the brief quake.

“Felt this in St. Catharines, ON at exact same time. That was nuts!” one person wrote.

“Anyone feel that? Was that an earthquake in Niagara Falls?” another wrote.

No serious injuries have been reported in the earthquake.
