After Alessia Cara made history by winning a Grammy Award on Sunday, the internet has mixed emotions. Cara had to deal with some negativity…but she fought back and it was awesome.
At Sunday’s 60th Annual Grammy Awards, 21-year-old singer Alessia Cara was the very excited recipient of the Best New Artist award — her first Grammy. She’s the first Canadian artist to win in the prestigious category, beating out such previous Canadian nominees as Drake and Justin Bieber.
Cara, who was up against Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and Sza, was clearly shocked and grateful to have won the award.
this is so weird and I’ll never quite process it but thank u so much for ur continuous love and support and belief in me and wow and yeah

But the internet had a lot to say about it, mostly questioning her “newness” in the industry and her eligibility to win the award.

She does have a loyal fanbase that backed her up online.

And not long after, Cara responded to the backlash, too.
“I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was a kid, not to mention have worked really hard for,” she wrote.
She mentions her insecurities, how hard she has worked to get to this point in her career, and what this award means to her.
“I will not let everything I’ve worked for be diminished by people taking offence to my accomplishments and feeling the need to tell me how much I suck.”
Cara was also nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video and Song of the Year categories. She was also the only woman to win a major award at this year’s event.
