Toronto police have laid 100 charges against a young man and a teen boy after 10 cars were stolen from the city and Durham Region.

All 10 cars were stolen between May 15 and May 26. During that time a store was robbed as well. During each carjacking a man would approach the victim while in their cars. Armed with a pistol, the man would demand the keys.

A second car would wait near by with a second person. If successful the pair would take off in the cars. The pair tried this 10 times and made off with five cars.

In store robbery a man entered the premises and demanded fireworks and cash at gunpoint. At least one suspect waited in the getaway car outside during the robbery.

Meanwhile the armed man forced an employee, still at gunpoint, to load the fireworks into the car after snatching the cash.

After these events the Toronto Police Hold-Up squad launched Project ZigZag to find the men responsible. The squad arrested two suspects on June 2 and recovered all the vehicles.

Meanwhile a steep rise in carjackings, 48 per cent higher in Durham, has led numerous GTA police to join forces in a York-led coalition.

“Carjackings are often violent and affect the larger community, as well as the victims involved. This collaborative approach targets the criminals committing carjackings as well as the organized criminal groups behind them,” said Toronto Police.
