Brampton folk and roots singer AHI’s star continues to rise with a $10,000 win at the SiriusXM Black Canadian Music Awards.

Described as having a voice like “gravel on silk,” AHI is a two-time Juno Award nominee from Brampton based out of Toronto. With a nod on the Polaris Prize long list last year, the Brampton-born singer has just hit another career milestone with a win at the Black Canadian Music Awards.

Now in its third year, the Black Canadian Music Awards were created to recognize and celebrate the artistic merit demonstrated by Black music creators of any genre. SiriusXM Canada has doubled their support for the award this year, with the five selected winners each receiving a prize of $10,000 to support their career development.

Other winners this year include pianist Desarae Dee, Afro-RandB singer-songwriter Nonso Amadi, and Montreal rapper Zach Zoya.

With tightly-crafted lyrics, driving rhythms, and catchy melodies, AHI’s latest album Prospect is helping propel AHI to the forefront of the contemporary Folk/Roots scene. A cover of the Elton John classic Your Song performed by AHI was also recently featured in an IKEA commercial.

AHI has amassed over 60 million streams worldwide, charting on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon. He has also delivered performances on CBS and NPR Tiny Desk and toured internationally with Mandy Moore and Milow for his latest studio release.

The album has earned AHI his second JUNO nomination for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year and his first-ever Polaris Prize nod, establishing him as one of Canada’s most exciting new voices.

This year the Awards had a record number of applications from artists across Canada, spanning a multitude of genres.

Winners were selected by a jury and advisory council of prominent Black artists and industry leaders. For more information on the Black Canadian Music Awards visit www.socanfoundation.ca.
