The official opening of the Susan Fennel Sportsplex is being held tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 14) at 12:30 p.m.

Currently the South Fletcher’s Sportsplex, the City of Brampton renamed the facility after the former mayor about a year ago.

Fennell served on Brampton City Council from 1988 to 2014, during which she was instrumental in bringing the South Fletcher’s Sportsplex to life.

Located at 500 Ray Lawson Boulevard, the Sportsplex originally opened in 1997. The centre offers a variety of registered and drop-in swimming, skating, sports and fitness programs, as well as registered dance, STEM and child and youth programs.

Fennell will speak at the event, as will Mayor Patrick Brown and councillors Jeff Bowman, Martin Medeiros and Rowena Santos.

Fennell’s time as mayor was not without controversy. She and the city faced a multi-million dollar lawsuit from local builder John Cutruzzola and his construction company Inzola.

The suit alleged Fennell showed favouritism to another builder during a bidding process to construct a $500-million City Hall West Tower expansion and Southwest Quadrant renewal project in 2010. Only the first phase of the project was completed.

Ultimately, the lawsuit was dismissed and Cutruzzola was ordered to pay $3.1 million to cover the city’s legal fees.
