The urgent care centre at Brampton’s Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness is closed through at least Monday as the health system continues to work through “extreme capacity and staffing pressures.”

William Osler Health System made the announcement on Sunday, saying the closure is due to increasing volumes in emergency departments and patients who require admission for care.

Osler said temporarily closing the urgent care centre (UCC) was a difficult decision, but the move will help the health system direct staff and physicians “to where demand is the greatest.”

“The ability to re-open the UCC will be examined on a day-to-day basis based on available staffing and capacity across our sites,” Osler said.

Osler said the increasing volumes of patients is being “further compounded by our extreme capacity and staffing pressures.”

The temporary shut down comes just days after Osler lifted a “Code Orange” at Brampton Civic Hospital, and one week Peel Paramedic Union said the EMS was running at Code Black.

All non-urgent programs and services at Brampton Civic and all other hospitals in the province have been suspended while the healthcare system grapples with staffing and capacity issues due to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Osler president and CEO Dr. Naveed Mohammad said on Wednesday that the health system typically sees an increase in patients during the winter months, but a “significant” number of COVID-19 patients has “compounded the season surge.”

In an interview with Insauga.com last week, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown called out the province for not investing in healthcare capacity during the pandemic.

The Peel Memorial Centre provides Brampton and surrounding communities a wide variety of health care services including day surgery, seniors’ programs, mental health, women’s and children’s programs, diagnostic imaging and dialysis.
