Patio season is around the corner and restaurants, bars and cafes in Brampton looking for a little more elbow room can apply to bring their business outdoors.

The City of Brampton is now taking applications for temporary patio expansions from local businesses, giving more options to establishments that don’t normally have an outside area.

The Patio Brampton Program was brought in during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow for temporary outdoor extensions of liquor-licensed establishments and allow for physical distancing.

The City has extended the program again this summer, allowing businesses to apply for a temporary outdoor patio.

Approved applicants will be permitted to build temporary, seasonal patios and seating areas on municipal or private property until Oct. 31. Businesses given the green light will be responsible for the removal of the patio and making sure where it was set up is back to normal by Nov. 7.

The province made changes earlier this year to give Ontario municipalities the power to approve temporary outdoor extensions of establishments with a valid liquor license.

Municipalities can now approve temporary outdoor extensions of licensed premises for up to eight months in a calendar year, create their own conditions for approval, and are responsible for ensuring compliance.
