A Brampton non-profit organization just launched the first mental health basketball program. 

Aspire for Higher is a not for profit grassroots organization who has provided basketball programming for youth in the Greater Toronto Area since 2013. They offer a variety of youth programs for children aged 4 to 17 including introductory basketball programs, development leagues and summer camps. 

Inspired by Canada’s Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development Model, their programs are athlete-centred, coach driven and government, sport science and sponsor supported. 

And, now they have launched the YOF Development League, which the first mental health basketball program.

Led by the A4H executive team who have all played university basketball at the highest level in North America, the YOF development league focuses on developing fundamental basketball skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship and a passion for the love of the game of basketball. The program includes skill development drills, officiated gameplay and a mandatory one-hour off-court workshop. The workshop will focus on issues related to leadership, mentorship and anti-black racism in Peel.

“The curriculum and programming build on the understanding that sports are a great way to develop goal setting and teamwork skills and tools to help manage adversity – all of which can be applied off the court,” writes Aspire for Higher on their website.

The basketball curriculum is built off of A4H’s strategic elite camp framework, which aligns with Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model.

People can register for the free 11-week program starting August 16. People are required to pay a $20 administration fee. The program starts on September 28 and will be held every Saturday from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m at St. Roch Secondary School. However, players must be in grade seven or eight to register.
