A mother in Brampton is set to receive an award for her bravery for chasing off a group of men who were attacking her son with a machete.

Joti Singh Mann, a well-known realtor and radio journalist, was getting into his car on the morning of August 4 when he was attacked from behind.

A group of three men rushed to the car right after Mann closed the door. The first to reach the car smashed out the window with an axe.

Mann opened the door arms raised, and kicks at the axe-wielding man while the attacker smashed at him. A second, evidently unarmed man grabs Singh Mann by the ankle and tries to pull him from the car.

A third man, armed with a machete comes to the door and strikes Mann repeatedly. Mann then tries to flee around the his Jeep, rushing past the men. He makes it to the rear of the car, but falls to the ground and continually beaten with the weapons.

From inside, Mann’s mother, Jasmail Kaur Mann, saw the ongoing attack and rushed out to chase away the attackers. She threw a shoe at the men and all three rushed to a getaway car driven by a fourth man.

After police were called around 8:15, Joti Mann was rushed to hospital with serious wounds. He required 150 stitches and nearly lost his hand.

The attack on Mann was one of three in in city in recent weeks target media personalities. Peel Regional Police later confirmed this was a targeted assault. Mann had received death threats, of which police were aware, two days before the attack.

In the aftermath of the attack Mayor Patrick Brown said he was “horrified” such an assault could happen in a quiet neighborhood in broad daylight.

He called the attack an “attempted murder” and commended Jasmail Mann for her bravery in chasing the men off. Due to her actions Brown will award Jasmail Mann with a bravery award on September 1 on behalf of the city.

While police said the don’t encourage people to emulate Jasmail Mann, they conceded her actions saved him from addition injury and probably saved his life.

Police continues to investigate the attack as an attempted murder. None of the four suspects have been identified or arrested. Their motive remains unknown.
