Brampton, Mississauga school board will fly transgender flag

For the first time, the Peel District School Board, representing students from Brampton and Mississauga, will raise the Transgender Pride Flag.
The flag will be raised at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga on Monday, May 17, in celebration of PDSB transgender students, staff and community members and in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
“With the raising of the Transgender Pride Flag, our intent is to send a message that the PDSB is committed to standing against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia and that all forms of discrimination and oppression need to be understood and uprooted in our schools and communities”, said Colleen Russell-Rawlins, director of education.
“It highlights the importance that public education should play in upholding the humanity of all persons – everyone should feel proud and safe to express who they are.”
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is an opportunity for PDSB students and staff to acknowledge and reflect on the violence and discrimination experienced by 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Through this recognition, PDSB students and staff can demonstrate the ongoing commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression by recognizing and standing for the diverse and intersectional experiences of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in our schools, worksites and throughout our communities.
This board encourages staff, students, families and communities to learn about the many achievements and contributions of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities, in addition to their histories, trials and tribulations.
