Mayor Patrick Brown believes COVID lockdown measures will be lifted on a gradual basis in Ontario, which means Brampton will likely have to wait longer than other parts of the province to see looser restrictions.

Speaking to Khaled Iwamura of inbrampton.com, Brown said that just like the re-opening of schools, he thinks Queen’s Park will take a similar approach when it comes to dealing with the current stay-at-home order set to expire on February 10. Brampton, along with Mississauga and Toronto, has been hit the hardest by the coronavirus in Ontario which has resulted in stricter and longer measures put in place to reduce community transmission.

Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet are currently weighing the options surrounding the re-opening of Ontario and an announcement is expected next week.

“The rumours are it is going to be lifted in parts of the province, likely not the GTA,” said Brown commenting with informed speculation. “But we have not been told of any plan by the government.”

He believes the same scenario exists for small business.

“The case transmission was very small among small retailers and restaurants,” he said. “I do think they (sanctions) are ready to be lifted, but ultimately this won’t be a local decision, this will be a Provincial decision.

Brown said he is satisfied with the plan to re-open schools which will happen for Brampton students on February 16. He said local health officials indicate the risk of transmission of the virus is low for children when the proper precautions are taken and he believes those precautions are in place in Peel Region schools.
