Brampton man charged with assaulting OPP officers after fleeing from cops

Police have laid 20 charges including assault, drug, weapon offences against a Brampton man following an alleged run from the law.

Around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 15), police say members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 in Huntsville when they attempted to stop a speeding vehicle.

Police say the driver refused to stop and continued travelling south on Highway 11 into Bracebridge and exited onto Taylor Road.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle on Taylor Road using strategically placed cruisers according to police, but the driver allegedly struck and damaged the police cars in an attempt to flee.

Police say the officers were able to gain control of the driver and placed him under arrest.

While searching the vehicle, officers say they located a prohibited conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a taser.

Officers also reportedly found break-in tools in the vehicle, a device used to copy credit cards, and cannabis.

Kyle Coombes, 27, of Brampton has been charged with:

  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Five counts of Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Operation while impaired
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession break in Instruments
  • Possession of Prohibited Device
  • Instrument for use in copying credit cards-makes
  • Failure to comply with release order-other than to attend court
  • Possession property obtained by Crime under $5000
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Speeding 133km/hr in a posted 100km/hr zone
  • Driver fail to properly wear seatbelt
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Drive motor vehicle no licence

Police say Coombes was placed in custody and was scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on Feb. 16 for a bail hearing.
