Former Thunder Bay police chief arrested and charged

Police have charged a Brampton man banned from Thunder Bay with multiple offences following a drug trafficking bust last month.

The OPP says officers arrested Brampton man Joshua Atewe in Thunder Bay on June 16 and found both fentanyl and cocaine in his possession.

The 26-year-old is known to police in Thunder Bay and is under court orders to only be in the city for court appearances.

Police say the accused tried to mislead officers and gave them a fake name during the incident. Police identified the man, who investigators say had breached a probation order from May of last year.

Atewe was charged with multiple offences, including possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Police say Atewe was previously arrested in Dec. 2021 after police found squatters in a Thunder Bay apartment. When police entered the home, they witnessed what appeared to be individuals attempting to destroy evidence related to drug trafficking.

Atewe was arrested a short while later in that incident after leading police on a foot chase.

The accused was scheduled to appear in a Thunder Bay court on June 21.
