Charges have been laid against a Brampton resident arrested at Pearson International Airport for allegedly scamming more than $5,000 from a business west of Hamilton.

Back in December of 2021, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the Oxford detachment was contacted by a business in Norwich Township, some 80 kilometres west of Hamilton, that said it was the victim of a fraud in October of that year.

Police investigated and say an electronic invoice was “intercepted by an unknown individual.”

A suspect was identified but no arrested were made until this past Wednesday (Feb. 15) when police say a 24-year-old from Brampton was taken into custody at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Gift Wenkye, 24, of Brampton has been charged with:

  • Fraud Over $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Laundering Proceeds of Crime – did use – Commission in Canada

No details about the business or how the invoice was intercepted.

The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Woodstock at a later date, police said. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the fraud occurred in October of 2022. The incident allegedly occurred in October 2021.
