Popular Brampton raised musician shot dead in India

A Brampton rapper shot dead in India last month could be immortalised with a mural, memorial tree and an entry on the city’s Walk of Fame.

Known by his stage name Sidhu Moose Wala, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was killed on May 29 while travelling in a vehicle in the Mansa district in Punjab.

Over 30 rounds were fired into Wala’s vehicle by occupants of two other vehicles and police believe there is gang involvement in the murder, according to reports on NDTV.

Moose Wala reportedly sustained some 19 gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead a short time later.

On Wednesday (June 8), Brampton Regional Coun. Gurpreet Dhillon and City Coun. Harkirat Singh put forward a motion asking city staff to work with members of the community to explore developing a mural honouring Moose Wala’s memory in Brampton.

The councillors also called for Moose Wala to be considered for the Brampton Walk of Fame, and the planting of a memorial tree in the city.

The rapper was a controversial figure in India, in part due to his lyrical style.

In 2020, police charged him under India’s Arms Act for allegedly promoting gun culture in one of his songs.

The rapper also joined India’s Congress Party last year and unsuccessfully ran in the state’s assembly elections.

Wala was influenced by Tupac Shakur and became known for his music in 2017 with hit song “So High,” a gangster rap collaboration with Byg Byrd.

His debut album in 2018 made it to Canada’s Billboard Albums chart.

Wala was born in 1993 in Moose Wala in the Mansa district of Punjab, India. He studied at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Ludhiana, gaining his education in electrical engineering before moving to Brampton in 2016.

In April 2022, Moose Wala released his debut Ep “No Name” which reached number 73 on Billboard Top Canadian Albums.
