Brampton is celebrating International Women’s Day by recognizing the achievement of local women while raising awareness about violence against women and human trafficking.

International Women’s Day is on Tuesday (March 8), and the city is hosting two in-person events to highlight the achievements and impact of inspiring women who have helped make Brampton a livable, compassionate and prosperous city.

The panels – Say No to Violence Against Women: Human Trafficking, and Local Women & How They Contribute to the Women’s Empowerment Landscape in Brampton – will run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and will feature in-person panel discussions hosted by Jam Gamble and moderated by Councillors Charmaine Williams and Rowena Santos.

Panel Discussions

The sessions are a partnership with the Zonta Club of Brampton-Caledon and will bring together experts and community partners.

There will also be a keynote address by Samra Zafar – an award-winning speaker, best-selling author and educator for equity, mental health, and human rights.

“This International Women’s Day we celebrate the power and strength of women, who have and continue to be the backbone of our community. Join us on March 8 at the in-person panel discussion and keynote event to talk about important topics in the community like the misconceptions of human trafficking, gender bias and more. It’s wonderful to see the collaboration between so many community partners to make this event a success.”

City Coun. Charmaine Williams said the events are a chance to “celebrate the power and strength of women, who have and continue to be the backbone of our community.”

Guests to the panel can also help support Brampton’s Ellen House charity by making a donation in exchange for an Experience Box featuring products and services from local women-owned businesses.

These limited edition, curated gift boxes include products like hydrating face masks by Moodgxl, affirmation cards by The Sankalpa Project, bath bombs by Aroma Comforts 4 U, herbal bath salts by Fruits and Roots Holistics.

Boxes will be delivered to the first 50 people who make a charitable donation of at least $20 to Ellen House, which is a supportive residence for women in conflict with the law.

The house is staffed by counsellors offering one-on-one assistance to residents and help develop individualised plans to meet their specific needs in the areas of self-care, community, education, access to resources.
