Brampton had a record-breaking year for film and TV productions

A "major TV network" is looking for estranged or distant duos over the age of 50 to be featured in a new baking show that will be filmed in Hamilton.

From busting corrupt police officers to trekking to strange new worlds, Brampton was the backdrop for a record number of locally filmed productions last year.

Brampton hosted 80 different film, television and commercial projects for more than 553 days of filming activity in 2021 – that’s a 90 per cent increase from the previous year.

The new Star Trek series Strange New Worlds was filmed in Brampton on a virtual production studio in an industrial wearhouse.

The show premieres on Thursday (May 5), and the latest instalment of the sci-fi franchise.

The Amazon production Reacher filmed in studio and on location in Brampton last year, as did the Netflix film 13: The Musical.

Other recent Brampton productions include the Hulu/CTV series The Handmaid’s Tale and the Kevin Hart comedy The Man from Toronto.

The city says the economic impact of productions in Brampton since 2018 is over $18 million, with nearly $400,000 added to city revenue last year alone.

Paul Morrison, interim chief administrative officer for the city said the efforts of the Film and Television Office have helped Brampton “thrive during the pandemic and bring exponential economic growth to the city.”

With film-friendly locations like parklands, sport fields, residential neighbourhoods and industrial areas, the city says Brampton is the ideal place for film production.

The city’s Film and Television Office says it is working alongside other city stakeholders to facilitate production needs.
