A rascally reptile has a second chance at life thanks to a daring lake rescue by firefighters and a Brampton-based wildlife group.

Members of the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services were called to Heart Lake on Saturday (Jan. 7) to assist members of the Heart Lake Turtle Troopers with an animal rescue.

BFES said a turtle had become frozen in the lake about 100 yards out on the ice, and the Troopers and members of the BFES water rescue team got to work.

A citizen volunteer group supporting the protection of Brampton’s local turtle population, the Heart Lake Turtle Troopers patrol Brampton’s waterways to monitor the local turtle population.

Crews were able to free the turtle from the ice, and the Turtle Troopers said the rescued reptile is safe and being medically assessed and managed by the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre.

Anyone who finds a turtle that may be in need of assistance can contact the Heart Lake Turtle Troopers online. For more information on the Heart Lake Turtle Troopers visit their website or Facebook page.
