Brampton’s newest millionaire says he “can’t wait to count all the zeros” after winning a huge Maxmillions prize with $1 million dollars.

Shanmugalingam Kanagaratnam is a 56-year-old father of two who says he is a regular lottery player, buying tickets every week for the Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 draws.

The Brampton father thought he won big in the Oct. 21 Lotto Max draw with a $500,000 payout but realized he’d won much more after double-checking the ticket.

“When I went to the store to have the ticket validated and I saw $1 million, I was shocked,” Kanagaratnam said while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his winnings. “My son was with me, and we were both so excited. We started talking about all the things we could do with this money.”

Kanagaratnam says he plans to use the money to purchase a home for his family.

“I am so excited. I can’t wait to count all the zeros on this cheque. My future will be much brighter now,” he said.

Lotto 6/49 offers players a chance to win two multi-million dollar jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday, for the same $3 per play.

The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot for every draw, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees a $1 million prize or the growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can exceed $60 million.

OLG says it supports safe play and responsible gambling through its PlaySmart program.

The winning ticket was purchased at JJ Convenience on Cottrelle Blvd. in Brampton.
