Two Brampton City councillors are trying to convince car manufacturers to step in and make vehicles more difficult to steal.

Councillors Rowena Santos and Paul Vicente of Wards 1 and 5 say they went to the manufacturers to see if technological changes can be made to vehicles that will make them theft-proof.

The councillors point out that one manufacturer, Tesla, has already introduced technology designed to stymie thieves.

In Peel Region, 4,119 vehicles were stolen in 2021, an increase of 22 per cent from the previous year. However, in the first two months of this year 874 were targeted, an increase of 63 per cent during the same time period from the year before.

“The problem is widespread and growing fast,” the councillors say in a joint statement.

High-end Toyota and Lexus vehicles top the list of those most stolen in Brampton and Mississauga.

The councillors say recent meetings with community members show the issue has become a major problem and that safety tips no longer provide the solution as thieves use their own advanced technology to bypass locked doors and simple alarms.

Santos and Vicente say that meetings with Toyota executives have been encouraging and that senior level government officials need to be brought in to assist with finding solutions.
