After less than two seasons of play under their belts the Brampton Buccaneers have closed their dressing room doors for the last time.

The Allan Cup Hockey league (ACH) has cancelled or postponed a slate of upcoming games following an announcement from the Buccaneers that the team has shut down.

In a statement on Tuesday, the league said that the Senior AAA team has “ceased operations of their hockey franchise effective immediately.”

ACH Commissioner Rick Richardson tells Insauga.com that the Buccaneers informed the league they were leaving due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“This situation is very unfortunate for the players from the Brampton Buccaneers as their season has ended,” Richardson said.

The Buccaneers only joined the ACH in the 2022-23 season, playing out of Brampton’s CAA Centre. They lost all 11 of their regular season games and failed to qualify for playoffs ranking 4th, scoring 47 goals against and letting 113 slip across the goal line.

Only three games were left for the Buccaneers in the 2023-24 season before the shutdown. The team was scheduled to face off against the Wentworth Gryphins on Thursday, but the ACH says that game has been scrapped following the Buccaneers announcement.

The league says the team’s two other scheduled games against the Dundas Real McCoys later this month and the Stoney Creek Tigers in March have been scrapped, and all remaining teams will complete the regular season games without the Buccaneers with playoffs starting on March 2.

A post on the Real McCoys social media accounts says a Feb. 9 game with the Buccaneers was also postponed before the announcement.

Richardson said that its possible the Buccaneers would return for next season, adding there are “a couple of groups” groups interested in owning and operating a Senior AAA Hockey franchise in the GTA.

While Brampton may be losing its ACH Senior AAA squad it will soon gain an Ontario Hockey League team when the Mississauga Steelheads move to the Powerade Centre in Brampton.

In a message sent to season ticket holders last week, the OHL team announced it is heading to Brampton in time for the 2024/25 hockey season.
