Sheridan College will welcome the world to Brampton for an international industrial mechanics competition this year.

Skills Canada announced this week that Brampton has been selected to host the Industrial Mechanics competition for the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Edition.

The event will run from October 18 to 20 at Sheridan College’s Davis Campus in Brampton, and will include nine competitors representing nine countries or regions.

Now in its 46th year, the 2022 WorldSkills Competition was originally scheduled to be hosted in Shanghai but the competition will now be held in more than 20 cities in 15 countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Canada’s team of participants won the right to represent Canada at the 2022 Skills Canada National Competition that was hosted this past May in Vancouver, and Canada will be participating in a total of 27 skill areas that are being hosted in 11 countries.

Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer, Skills Canada, said finding skilled tradespeople “is more critical than ever” as Canada begins “the post pandemic recovery.”

“We are very pleased that Canada was selected as the host for this Skill Area for the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Edition,” Thorson said in a statement. “The WorldSkills Competition is a great way to inspire youth from around the world to pursue a career in the skilled trades and technologies.”

The competition is held every two years, and WorldSkills say the contest represents “the gold standard of excellence in skilled trades and technologies” from around the world, inspiring young competitors to turn their passion into a profession.

The entire 2022 WorldSkills Competition will include 60 skill areas, and 1,100 competitors from around the globe who will be vying for the title of international champion.
