It was Maverick to the rescue when a bomb threat was called into the Walmart at 102 Primeway Dr. in Welland last night (Feb. 8)

At 8:45 pm, a store employee called the Niagara Police alerting them to the phoned-in bomb scare with the caller saying the explosive was in the store.

The police arrived quickly and helped staff evacuate the store. They brought Maverick from the K9 Unit to help them as the German Shepherd is “trained in general purpose/tracking and explosive detection.”

After a thorough sweep of the store with Maverick at their side, the police determined there was no bomb on site. At 9:45 pm, the evacuation was lifted and employees, as well as shoppers, were allowed back in.

Police are continuing the investigation and asking anyone with information is asked to contact the investigators by dialing 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1023300.
